March 22nd – April 30th, 2010
Poet Maya Angelou, suffragist Emily Newell Blair, photographer Hattie Farrington, astronauts Linda Godwin and Janet L. Kavandi, operatic soprano Marian Wright Powers, First Lady Bess Truman and the only female buffalo soldier Cathay Williams were among the many prominent Missouri women featured in this traveling exhibit. On loan from the Missouri Women’s Council, “Outstanding Women of Missouri” profiled 72 women including educators, physicians, politicians, attorneys, journalists, ambassadors, pioneers, adventurers, artists, entrepreneurs and soldiers.
Historical Society members added a local touch to the exhibit with displays on interesting women in Taney County’s history. Local women profiled include the well-known, such as Kewpie creator Rose O’Neill (pictured above), author Mary Elizabeth Mahnkey, and tourism pioneer Pearl “Sparky” Spurlock, but also include educators, journalists, physicians, ministers, and businesswomen. Dr. Alice Nightingale, Birdle Mannon, Dr. Mary King Long, Mary Herschend, Elizabeth McDaniel, Almeda Brittain, and Edna Waltz are a few of the additional women featured.
