A group of students from Kirbyville Middle School are expanding their knowledge of local history while improving their research and writing skills in an unusual way. In a joint effort with the White River Valley Historical Society, the 7th grade Language Arts class, under the direction of Marilyn Yung, has taken on the project of providing articles for the Society’s bi-monthly Whippersnappers children’s newsletter.

“We formed the Whippersnappers Club at the WRVHS a few years ago, but were not able to devote as much time to it as it really needed to flourish,” explained WRVHS Managing Director Leslie Wyman. “When Mrs. Yung contacted us regarding a ‘hands-on’ project for the students, we realized that being involved in the publication of an actual newsletter would not only resurrect the Whippersnappers Club to become an active children’s group again, but would also give the students the research and writing experience they’ll need in high school and college. Several of them have already expressed interest in learning more about careers in publishing because of this project!”

While the actual newsletter will be designed by WRVHS Editor Dustan Ingenthron, the class will be given the opportunity to observe the process as he combines their stories, recipes, photographs and games into a publication. The WRVHS will also maintain the Club’s mailing list and produce and mail the newsletters. In addition to being part of the Whippersnappers newsletter, plans are to include selected articles in the Society’s Quarterly Journal magazine and website.

“The students are excited to be creating the content for the newsletter,” stated Yung. “They can’t wait for it to be published, and they’re already planning future issues.”

The Whippersnappers Club is free and directed primarily toward children aged 14 and under. Membership forms are available at either of the Society’s locations, or by emailing info@wrvhs.org.

  1. We loved the October/November issue… the first one! Our students are excited that they are part of a “real” publication that reaches the surrounding communities. Students are finishing their articles for the December issue.
