The White River Valley Historical Society is offering several genealogical/historical research courses this summer and fall at no cost to attendees.
On Saturday, August 11, there will be a day-long Beginning Research workshop at the Society, located at 297 Main St, Forsyth (across from the Judicial Center). While primarily consisting of instructional presentations ranging from organization to planning a research trip to breaking through “brick walls”, participants will also begin compiling various charts and data sheets on their ancestors and other historical subjects of interest. Refreshments will be provided; however, each person will be on their own for lunch.
In mid-fall, the WRVHS will offer a multi-week, hands-on evening research course (dates to be determined). Those interested in attending this course will need to have basic knowledge of research, whether through the Society’s Beginning Research workshop or other past experience. Following completion of the course, participants, as well as other local researchers, will be given the opportunity to form small groups who meet at the historical society on a regular basis for continued hands-on research.
“Many individuals in the community have asked us to offer these courses,” explained WRVHSManaging Director Leslie Wyman. “Now that we’ve been designated by the Taney County Commission as the organization to process their historic research requests, we have researchers in nearly every day—some for genealogy and others for specific subjects. It’s apparent that there are a lot of people out there who are eager to learn more about research, but are overwhelmed by the prospect. The workshop will help break it all down into more understandable, easy steps, and the multi-week course will then give participants a chance to experiment with the process while having experienced researchers on hand to give assistance. It’s our hope that the small groups will offer fun opportunities to work on research projects with other like-minded individuals present to bounce ideas and share information with. Thanks to a grant from the Roy W. Slusher Foundation, we’re able to offer these at no cost to participants, along with our various children’s courses and workshops.”
Space is limited for each of these courses. Reservations may be made by calling the Society at 417-546-2210. In addition to the research library, the White River Valley Historical Society offers a gift shop/bookstore and museum, with no admission charge. Operating hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
