The White River Valley Historical Society is offering two genealogical/historical research courses this month, with no admission fee.
On Saturday, September 29th, there will be a day-long Beginning Research workshop at the Society, located at 297 Main St, Forsyth (across from the Judicial Center). While primarily consisting of instructional presentations ranging from organization to breaking through “brick walls”, participants will also begin compiling various charts and data sheets on their ancestors and other historical subjects of interest. Refreshments will be provided; however, each person will need to bring a brown-bag lunch.
“We held this workshop in August,” stated WRVHS Managing Director Leslie Wyman. “The workshop then was filled nearly to capacity, and we’ve had several requests from people to offer it a second time. It’s a great way to not only get started in research, but also may help more-experienced researchers gain fresh ideas on improving their storage of records or fine-tuning their search methods.”
On Thursday, October 4th, the WRVHS will kick off a four-week, hands-on evening research course. Those interested in attending these sessions will need to have basic knowledge of research, whether through the Society’s Beginning Research workshop or other past training. Participants will learn to search through physical records at two local research facilities, as well as online using both free, and “subscription” sites, with experienced researchers assisting.
